HEART - What We Do

HEART HEART is run informally (we try to steer clear of committees) by Gill and Ange from our homes in Bedminster Down and Keynsham respectively and we are supported by the invaluable assistance of a stalwart band of fosterers.

We like to keep animals in a home environment partly because we feel this is more beneficial for them but mainly so that we can get to know their personalities and temperaments and thereby better assess the type of home and family to which they would be best suited.

All animals are health-checked, wormed and flea treated on arrival and seen by our Vet if necessary. Where practical all are neutered prior to rehoming, kittens and puppies are vaccinated and cats are tested for the fiv and felv viruses.

We will always make every effort to help any animal in any situation. In each of the last 5 years we have helped over 250 animals which for a small group of volunteers working from our own homes in our spare time we think is quite impressive.

As well as the usual run of cats, dogs and rabbits we have dealt with degues, chinchillas, most other small pets, chickens, various other birds, horses, goats, an abandoned tarantula and a tank of tropical fish. We have also dealt with a variety of wildlife most memorably a badly injured badger that sadly had to be put to sleep.

Most of our rescues are re-homed but there are some, mainly the 'elderly and infirm' as we call them that stay on a permanent basis to live out the rest of their life in comfort and safety; no animal is ever put to sleep unless we and our Vet feel that is the kindest thing to do.

Nothing is ever turned away and if we cannot help ourselves we do our best to find someone who can.

Generally funds are raised by donations from the public, either on a general basis or on adoption of a rescued animal or in the form of sponsorship of animals whilst they are in foster care or undergoing veterinary treatment. Occasionally we receive grants from animal welfare trusts and donations from sponsored events.

We hold dog shows, car boot and tabletop sales, raffles, collect aluminium cans to sell for re-cycling and used postage stamps for re-sale. If you can help with any of these we would be pleased to hear from you; see our 'Other Ways to Help' page for more details.
